BoardMath & BoardLanguage


BoardMath® is a standards based preview and review strategy that uses whole class choral response to do 11 math problems (kindergarten) and 21 math problems (first through fifth grades)  a day covering the content in each of the five mathematic strands delineated in the California content standards.


BoardMath® is used as a strategy to support the adopted math program, not to supplant it.  It requires around 20 minutes a day and spirals standards so that students are exposed to all the math strands of the standards daily.  BoardMath® is not the time for a whole direct teaching lesson on a concept. The objective of a BoardMath® lesson is to have the teacher lead students through practice examples using modeling in the form of a think aloud and asking for whole group choral response.


BoardLanguage® is a daily standards based preview and review strategy that uses whole class choral response to cover the content for language arts standards at a particular grade level. BoardLanguage® was created by Napa Valley Unified teachers who found BoardMath very effective and wondered if there was a way to teach language standards using the same or similar strategy.

BoardLanguage® is a quick paced oral review strategy requiring around 15 to 20 minutes daily, which stresses whole group choral response in much the same way that BoardMath does.  BoardLanguage® reinforces or previews concepts that have been or will be directly taught in the core curriculum, and offers the repetition that helps students learn grade level standards in a broad sense.
